Chapter 14

Alexandra’s eyes snapped open in a jolt of alarm as a sudden, unsettling sound emanated from their ensuite bathroom. Without a moment’s hesitation to shake off the remnants of sleep, she swiftly cast aside her bedcovers and sprinted toward the bathroom, her pulse pounding with trepidation. Her heart constricted painfully within her chest as anguish overtook her upon witnessing Blake’s pitiful state on the cold bathroom floor. Blake was hunched over the toilet, her chest convulsing with each gut-wrenching retch, desperate to expel the tormenting contents of her stomach. Or lack thereof.

Alexandra retrieved a small towel from the bathroom’s hanger, dampened it with cool water, and knelt down beside Blake. Her movements were purposeful as she lowered herself to the floor, placing her right hand tenderly at the center of Blake’s back, massaging in slow, comforting circles along the length of her spine. In her other hand, she held the moist towel, which she used to gently pat away the beads of perspiration that had formed on Blake’s forehead. Their journey toward parenthood had commenced ten weeks ago, and the unwelcome arrival of morning sickness had descended upon Blake only a week prior. Each day, without complaint, Blake faced the unrelenting discomfort as part and parcel of the pregnancy process. In turn, Alexandra remained resolute in her devotion to making Blake’s suffering as bearable as possible, ready to provide support whenever it was needed. Even in the quiet moments before dawn, she willingly rose from the comfort of their bed, simply to sit with Blake in the bathroom, offering her love and constant presence as they navigated this experience together.

As the relentless retching subsided, Alexandra leaned in and planted a tender kiss on the back of Blake’s head. She rose to her feet, making her way to the sink to fetch a glass of water. Returning to Blake’s side, she offered the glass, watching intently as Blake took a deep, relieving sip and used it to rinse her mouth, repeating the process to cleanse away the vestiges of her suffering. Once Blake handed the glass back to Alexandra, she eased herself away from her previous position hunched over the toilet, sitting on the bathroom floor, her back leaning against the wall. In the aftermath of the ordeal, the telltale signs of exhaustion were etched across Blake’s blue eyes, holding a glimmer of gratitude as she bestowed a wearied, yet appreciative, smile upon Alexandra. Without hesitation, Alexandra joined Blake on the floor—the action reflecting the depth of their bond—and gently took Blake’s left hand into her own, offering silent comfort and support.

Blake rested her head on Alexandra’s shoulders and said, “Our baby is kicking my ass. I’m hoping the morning sickness will only be in the first trimester. The vomiting is bad, but I hate the metallic taste in my mouth more.”

“I know, baby.” Alexandra lightly kissed the top of Blake’s head and then rested her head against her wife’s. “I know you don’t like taking the antiemetics, so hopefully you won’t have to go through this for the entire pregnancy.
